01 / Overview

600 W 400 V G5 servo drive with EtherCAT and integrated safety

The Omron R88D-KN06F-ECT-Z is a 600 W, three-phase 400 VAC G5 servo drive with EtherCAT and the safety option. The "KN" prefix in the R88D ordering code denotes the 400 V class — the industrial three-phase supply used in most European panels. The "06" gives 600 W output, "F" denotes the three-phase 400 V input variant, "ECT" EtherCAT, and "-Z" the safety option.

The 400 V class is preferred for higher-power G5 axes (typically 1 kW and up) because the input current is roughly half of the equivalent 200 V drive — smaller breakers, smaller contactors, and thinner cable. At 600 W the 400 V class is borderline but is commonly used to standardise the cabinet on one input voltage across all servo drives.

The "-Z" safety option implements STO (Safe Torque Off), SS1 (Safe Stop 1) and SLS (Safely Limited Speed) per IEC 61800-5-2. STO cuts drive output torque without removing power; SS1 ramps the axis to a controlled stop and then cuts torque; SLS monitors shaft speed and trips if the configured limit is exceeded. These functions are activated over EtherCAT FSoE (Fail Safe over EtherCAT) and meet SIL 3 / PL e when wired into a suitable safety controller.

Matching motor: R88M-K40030H (no brake) or R88M-K40030H-B (with brake), both 200 V / 400 V class 3000 rpm. The 20-bit absolute encoder in the motor pairs with the drive's high-resolution feedback loop. The drive supports auto-gain tuning, manual tuning, and a full vibration-suppression mode for low-rigidity mechanisms.

Typical Applications

  • Safety-rated motion axes on robotic cells (with FSoE-capable safety controller)
  • Press and stamping machines requiring SLS-limited speed for setup mode
  • 400 V cabinet standardisation across all G5 axes
  • Indexing tables and rotary cutters with STO protection
  • High-inertia vertical axes where SS1 controlled-stop matters

Buying Checklist

  • Verify the input voltage is 400 V class (KN) and not 200 V class (SN/KT) — they are not interchangeable
  • The safety functions require an FSoE-capable safety controller (e.g. Omron NX-SL3300 / NX-SL3500) on the same EtherCAT network
  • For a standard drive without safety, order the R88D-KN06F-ECT (no -Z suffix)
  • Match the motor to the 400 V 600 W class
  • Use Omron's specified EtherCAT cable — generic Cat 5e is not rated for FSoE duty

03 / FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between -ECT and -ECT-Z?

The -Z variant adds the safety option: STO, SS1, SLS per IEC 61800-5-2, activated over EtherCAT FSoE. The -Z drive is more expensive but required for any application where the drive participates in a functional safety circuit.

What safety controller do I need?

An FSoE-capable safety controller on the same EtherCAT network. The Omron NX-SL3300 / NX-SL3500 safety slices paired with an NX102 / NX502 controller are the typical choice. Third-party FSoE masters are also supported.

Can I retrofit a -Z drive into an existing line that uses standard drives?

Yes — the standard CIA 402 motion control behaviour is identical between the -ECT and -ECT-Z variants. The -Z just adds the FSoE safety layer. Existing motion programs do not need to change.

What is FSoE?

Fail Safe over EtherCAT — a black-channel safety protocol carried as a separate EtherCAT frame. The safety controller and the -Z drive exchange safety PDOs over FSoE while normal motion PDOs continue to flow on the same bus. It is standardised in IEC 61784-3.
