01 / Overview

400 W Accurax G5 Servo Drive with Built-in Safety

The Omron R88D-KT04H-Z is a 400 W servo drive from the Accurax G5 family, designed to control Accurax G5 servo motors up to 400 W on single-phase 200–240 VAC supplies. The drive accepts analog ±10 V velocity/torque commands or pulse-train position commands, making it a direct fit for retrofit applications replacing older G-Series or G3-Series drives, and for new systems where the controller is a PLC with analog or pulse outputs.

Three control modes are supported — position, velocity, and torque — selectable per axis. Auto-tuning of gains, real-time load-inertia estimation, and a built-in vibration-suppression filter simplify commissioning on packaging, labelling, and small-assembly machines. The drive reads 20-bit absolute encoders on the matching R88M-K motors, eliminating the need for an origin-return routine on every power-up.

Functional safety is built in. STO (Safe Torque Off), SS1 (Safe Stop 1), and SLS (Safely-Limited Speed) are rated SIL3 / PLe per IEC 61800-5-2, allowing direct integration into category-3 / PL d and higher machine-safety circuits without external contactors or safety relays. The compact book-style chassis saves panel space and side-by-side mounting keeps multi-axis cabinets dense.

Protective functions include overcurrent, overload, overvoltage, undervoltage, regen-overload, encoder-error, and heatsink-overtemperature detection. CX-Drive (Omron's servo commissioning software) handles parameter setup, monitoring, and waveform capture over USB.

Typical Applications

  • Packaging machinery — labelling, capping, and cut-to-length axes
  • Conveyor synchronisation and indexing tables
  • Small assembly and pick-and-place stations
  • X-Y positioning stages and gantries up to 400 W per axis
  • Retrofit of legacy G-Series or G3-Series servo systems
  • Machine-tool accessory drives and feeder mechanisms
  • Any 200 V class motion axis requiring certified functional safety (STO / SS1 / SLS)

Buying Checklist

  • Confirm supply: single-phase 200–240 VAC. For three-phase input use the R88D-KT04H (no -Z) variant.
  • Match motor series: pair with R88M-K 200 V class servomotor rated 400 W or below.
  • Verify functional-safety wiring: STO is a dual-channel input — both channels must be driven from a safety relay or safety PLC.
  • Plan panel cooling: derate above 40 °C ambient, allow ≥ 30 mm clearance top/bottom for airflow.
  • Use CX-Drive (USB) for commissioning, gain tuning, and waveform capture during FAT.
  • Order a CX-Drive cable (R88A-CCG001P) if your PC does not have a USB mini-B port.

03 / FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between R88D-KT04H-Z and R88D-KT04H?

The -Z suffix adds built-in functional safety (STO, SS1, SLS) rated SIL3 / PLe. Functionally identical otherwise. If your machine requires certified safe-stop integration, choose the -Z variant. For non-safety applications the standard R88D-KT04H is sufficient.

Can I use the R88D-KT04H-Z with a CJ2 or NX PLC?

Yes. Drive the analog ±10 V velocity/torque input from a CJ1W-DA08V or NX-DA2603 analog output module, or feed the pulse-train input from a CJ2M / NX position pulse output. For position control with electronic gearing, pair with the CJ1W-NC / CJ2W-NC position-control unit or NX series EtherCAT master.

Does the drive need an external braking resistor?

The internal regen resistor is sized for normal stop duty. For high inertia loads or frequent emergency stops, add an external regen resistor (R88A-RR40020S or equivalent, sized to the application) and set Pn600 / Pn601 to enable it.

How is the STO wired?

STO uses two redundant 24 V inputs (HWBB1+, HWBB1− and HWBB2+, HWBB2−). Both must be energized for the drive to enable output. Connect each channel through a safety-rated contactor or safety-PLC output. Removing either channel removes motor torque within milliseconds, meeting SIL3 / PLe per IEC 61800-5-2.
