01 / Overview

Compact mechanical interlock for hinged guard doors

The Omron D4DS-K2 is a compact, hinge-mount safety-door switch designed to be paired with a D4DS-series operation key (the "-K2" suffix denotes vertical / top key insertion). When the guard is closed, the key enters the switch head and actuates the contacts; pulling the guard open withdraws the key and forces the NC contact open.

The D4DS body shares a footprint with the D4NS family and is typically used on smaller doors where the space-saving form factor of the D4GL is not required but the same direct-opening mechanism is. It is rated for slow-action (simultaneous make/break) operation with gold-clad snap-action contacts, so it can switch both standard contactor loads and the low-current inputs of a safety relay or PLC.

The switch mounts through a single panel cut-out with two M5 screws, and the key is captured by a hinged bracket on the door leaf. The head is rotatable through 90° in the field so the same part can serve left- or right-hinged doors. The M20 conduit opening accepts a cable gland sized for the wiring route.

Typical use is on small to mid-size guard doors: packaging machine enclosures, light-curtain-protected workstations, robotic palletiser fences, and end-of-line test cells. The D4DS-K2 is a Cat 1 / PL c device on its own; for Cat 3 / PL d or Cat 4 / PL e circuits, wire the NC contact through a safety relay (e.g. Omron G9SA) or safety PLC together with a second guard-monitoring contact.

Typical Applications

  • Guard doors on packaging machines and small assembly cells
  • Hinge-mounted interlocks on light-curtain-protected workbenches
  • End-of-line test-cell access doors
  • Palletiser and de-palletiser fence gates
  • Retrofit of older D4NS installations to a smaller-footprint switch

Buying Checklist

  • Confirm key-mounting direction (K1 / K2 / K3 / K4 / K5) matches your door hinge
  • Check that the conduit thread (M20 vs PG13.5) matches your existing cable gland
  • For Cat 3 / PL d or higher, plan a safety relay — the D4DS alone is Cat 1 / PL c
  • If your door has play > 2 mm, verify the key insert / radius spec is met
  • Order the matching operation key (sold separately) at the same time

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the D4DS-K2 a non-contact switch?

No. The D4DS series is a mechanical interlock that requires a physical operation key. The "-K2" suffix indicates vertical key insertion. If you need a non-contact (magnetically-coded) switch, look at the D40 series instead.

What operation key do I need?

The D4DS-K2 takes the standard D4DS vertical-mount key (the same key used across the K1–K5 directional variants). The key is sold separately from the switch body.

What safety category does the D4DS achieve?

On its own the D4DS is suitable for Category 1 / PL c circuits. To reach Category 3 / PL d or Category 4 / PL e you need to route the NC contact through a safety relay such as the Omron G9SA or G9SP, in combination with a second monitoring contact.

Can the head be rotated after mounting?

Yes. The head is held by four captive screws and can be indexed in 90° steps to match the door hinge direction.
