01 / Overview

1024 P/R incremental encoder for high-resolution position feedback

The Omron E6C2-CWZ6C is the 1,024 P/R variant of the E6C2-C incremental encoder family. 1,024 pulses per revolution with quadrature decoding gives 4,096 counts per revolution — the standard resolution for general-purpose servo feedback and for precision length measurement.

The "CWZ6C" suffix denotes a complementary output on A, B and Z phases with a 5–24 VDC supply. The complementary signals (A / Ā, B / B̄, Z / Z̄) give differential transmission that cancels common-mode noise — important when the cable run is more than a few metres or the encoder sits near a VFD or a switching power supply.

At 5,000 rpm maximum shaft speed, 1,024 P/R produces ≈ 85 kHz output frequency, which is at the edge of what some PLC high-speed counters can handle. For high-speed applications, use the encoder-input port of an Accurax G5 or 1S servo drive, which is designed for exactly this frequency range.

The 50 mm body, 8 mm shaft and IP50 protection make this a good fit for inside-cabinet mounting on machine tools, packaging lines, and converting machinery where 1,024 P/R is the standard resolution.

Typical Applications

  • Position feedback into Accurax G5 or 1S servo drives
  • Precision length measurement on converting machinery
  • CNC machine tool spindle feedback
  • High-resolution indexing tables
  • Packaging machinery cut-to-length with sub-millimetre resolution

Buying Checklist

  • Verify the line-driver output (CWZ6C) matches the drive input — some drives require open-collector
  • Check the P/R code matches what the drive is configured to expect
  • For cable runs over 5 m, use a shielded twisted-pair extension cable and ground the shield at the drive end only
  • If the encoder will see washdown, choose the IP65 variant — this is IP50
  • Use a flexible coupling rated for the encoder's 8 mm shaft and the application side-load

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "line driver" mean here?

Omron uses "complementary voltage output" to mean the same thing: the encoder actively drives both the true and complement of each phase, so the receiver sees a differential signal that rejects common-mode noise. This is the same physical layer as an RS-422 line driver, even though the encoder itself is not RS-422 compliant in the protocol sense.

Is 1,024 P/R enough for servo feedback?

Yes — 1,024 P/R with ×4 quadrature decoding is the standard resolution for general-purpose servo positioning. For higher precision, step up to 20-bit encoders in the Accurax G5 or 1S motor families.

Can I use this with an NJ/NX PLC high-speed counter?

Yes. The complementary outputs connect to the differential high-speed counter inputs on the NJ/NX-series PLCs. Maximum count frequency on a standard CT021 input is 500 kHz, well above this encoder's 85 kHz maximum.
